Role: Strategy
THE ASK
Develop a social norms campaign around the issue of sexual safety on the BU campus for the entire BU community
THE CHALLENGE
While BU’s Sexual Assault Response and Prevention Center places a lack of emphasis on the effectiveness of open and honest communication. BU students, faculty, and staff feel awkward verbally communicating their true thoughts in every step of a relationship, friendship, and interaction because it is not normalized.
THE INSIGHT
They know the importance of communication. But BU students, faculty, and staff feel that communication is awkward because they are unsure of how and when they can openly and honestly communicate their thoughts across a variety of potentially sexual situations.
THE KEY MESSAGE
Open and honest communication is the only foolproof method of expressing one’s thoughts and emotions in sexual situations. No matter the time or place, BU students and faculty should feel confident to have open and honest communication - whether with a partner, friend, or stranger.
THE STRATEGY
The circumstances that lead to sexual misconduct vary and are at times unpredictable. Showing modern-day, vague and concrete circumstances of sexual misconduct allows students, faculty, and staff to apply these messages to their everyday lives. Students and faculty can learn how to effectively communicate in any situation that could potentially lead to sexual misconduct through a means that allows no room for misinterpretation.
